Alkaline Diet Healthily Restrictive? Intentionally or not, Victoria Beckham has contributed to promoting the alkaline diet significantly. Previously it used to be one of many healthy nutrition plans worth consideration. During the last three years, however, it’s become one of several weight-reduction plans especially popular among celebrities. The diet claims to shed pounds, improve your health on the whole and, finally, achieve the optimum balance between the acidic foods and alkaline ones. Why should this balance be sought for? Because it can help prevent a number of diseases like arthritis and cancer, which is a rather ambitious aim, but quite achievable if you stick to the alkaline diet. That’s what the advocates of the alkaline diet believe in. So, let’s look for some facts to find out more. Foods Affecting Bodily Fluids This is one of the pillars of the alkaline diet – a belief that foods depending on what they are rich in can affect bodily fluids (urine and blood), which either leads to various serious diseases or, on the contrary, prevents the latter or copes with any already existing. In simpler words it means that if you want to bring pH levels of your bodily fluids into balance, you should: avoid ”bad acid” holders like processed foods, refined sugar, meat, fish/shellfish, most grains, dairy, eggs, some nuts (peanuts, walnuts), caffeine, alcohol, etc. consume only alkalizing foods like vegetables, fruits, tofu and soybeans, some nuts (almonds, chestnuts), seeds, legumes, spices (cinnamon, mustard, sea salt). As you see, in terms of positive effects produced on your health, this is a rather controversial set of foods. If none of the alkaline foods raises an issue, some of those brought under the category of unhealthily acidic really do. Thus, allegedly unhealthy meat (lean including), fish and shellfish form the basis for many diets that have also proven their high effectiveness. As for the impact made on the bodily fluids, it should be mentioned that the only fluid that can be affected by consumed foods is urine. Your blood, which is slightly alkaline (7.35-7.45 pH), as the second major fluid mentioned in relation to this type of diet, cannot be substantially influenced by foods only, even if they are the richest in this chemical. It Is Healthy but Not in the Way Claimed With focus on fruits, vegetables, seeds, legumes, plenty of water, etc., the alkaline diet is bound to positively affect your health and body (read weight). Without unhealthy, high-calorie foods you can not only improve your over health and bodily functioning, but reduce excess weight and prevent or even reverse risks related to unhealthy eating habits. At the same time, imposing rather high restrictions on consuming even those foods that are considered rather beneficial in other diet plans, an issue ”if the alkaline diet is able to meet all nutritional needs of the body” remains open. The major related question concerns total elimination of animal protein contained in low-fat dairy products and lean meat, the foods approved in other diet plans. Receiving two vitally important chemicals only from plant sources like legumes, tofu, and soybeans may lead to protein and calcium deficiency. That is why even if the alkaline diet doesn’t involve calorie counting, you have to regularly monitor levels of macro- and micronutrients. As for a positive effect produced on your blood, its pH, as we’ve already mentioned, cannot be changed by consumption of alkaline foods only, even in greater portions and even for the rest of your life. Instead, lots of fruit and vegetables will improve your heart health, brain function, muscle strength, and bone density, and these are the facts rather than presumptions.
